Bearing acoustic emission noise

This article is to present the use of Acoustic Emission (AE) noise emitted from bearing before and after lack of lubricant conditions. In general, AE is the mechanical wave generated when the material is subjected under stress. The release of mechanical wave or so called strained energy is of frequency around 100 kHz which can be used for bearing health indication. The use of AE for bearing or rotating machines checker can be very early to catch the machine fault condition for example, lack of lubrication, contamination, defect, wear, debris, rolling element, cage, inner-race or outer race defect. Machine Health Checker (MHC) has wide ranges of products. Its function is to give the accurate measurement of rolling element bearing, journal bearing, gearbox, motor. The MHC products can take reading from machine straight away without any prior knowledge of bearing information. It only takes 15 seconds to get results wether the machine status is OK! or NOT! However, with the higher specification model such as MHC Memo Pro can also provide spectrum analysis of bearing defect frequency. Another emphasis can be made that with acoustic emission technology the MHC can give accurate yet reliable results for slow speed rotating machinery (down to 0.25 rpm).

Tank bottom (or floor) plate inspection using Acoustic Emission technique is a very useful inspection method in petrochemical, oil&gas industries. This is because the side walls and roof can be conveniently inspected with conventional nondestructive testing methods and releases are readily detectable. Tank floors are therefore less accessible and evidence of release remains largely hidden from view until the extent of the release is large. In-service degradation of tank bottoms is a result of internal, under-floor corrsion activities, potential leaks, over-stress, and deformation.
